Matias Messi held over 'illegal gun' in Argentina

Matias Messi, the older brother of Argentina and Barcelona football star Lionel Messi, has been accused of carrying an illegal weapon.

He was stopped by traffic police during routine checks early on Sunday.

Police said the 33-year-old at first refused to show his papers when he was stopped in the city of Rosario.

Police searched his car and found a gun in the glove compartment for which Matias Messi has not yet been able to provide a permit.

The officers said there was a brief scuffle between them and the football star's brother, during which Mr Messi sustained a cut to his eyebrow and the officers bruises.

Mr Messi was taken to a police station in Rosario and held for four hours, local media said.

He was arrested once before, in 2008, for carrying a weapon without a permit.

Members of the Messi family are also facing allegations of tax evasion in Spain.

Lionel Messi and his father Jorge are both accused of defrauding the authorities for more than €4m (£3m; $4.5m) related to income from the use of his image.

They have both denied wrongdoing.
